  • Degrees of Allegiance: Harassment and Loyalty in Missouri’s World War I German-American Community, Ohio University Press, 2012. A study of the German American experience during the heightened anti-German sentiment in the United States during World War I. The book earned the Missouri Book Award from the State Historical Society of Missouri in 2012.
  • • “Courage, Duty, Patriotism: The Missouri Home Guard during the Great War,” Missouri Historical Review 113, no. 4 (April 2019): 240-258. During WWI, the National Guard was federalized and sent to fight overseas. In its absence, 27 states, including Missouri established home defense organizations to protect citizens during natural disasters, militant labor unrest, and potential German sabotage. The Missouri Home Guard was an entirely volunteer organization that maintained law and order without having to use force and reflected the Show Me spirit during an uncertain time on the home front.
  • • “Faith and Country: How Jews Found Unity in World War I,” Gateway 38, no. 2 (Fall 2018): 30-43. World War I and the demands to demonstrate loyalty to the United States created an environment in which American Jews who had arrived during the nineteenth century and become lest strict in their adherence to religious practices to unite with newly arriving Jews who hailed from eastern Europe and were orthodox in their religious practices,
  • • “Heroines on the Home Front: World War I and the Council of National Defense’s Woman’s Committee, Missouri Division,” Missouri Historical Review 112 no. 3 (April 2018): 169-188. This study of women's contributions on the home front during World War I focuses on Missouri women. Although most used the traditional female work of nursing, nurturing, and education to assist in the mobilization of sources on the home front, their work also contributed to Missouri ratifying the nineteenth amendment.
